| Dj Breakplus.. Don't even get me started on this kid. Well okay, the story goes like this. On a summer's afternoon, I walked into a bomb shelter studio in a basement in Geneva, and had my mind blown by a hands on display of MPC manipulation funky enough to give Jabo a run for his money. Mandrill strings rising and falling over cycling drum patterns, breaks clattering and chanting, the bastard son of Afronaught and Charles Stepney emanating from the speakers, as Ianeq (A Few Among Others) worked the levels on the desk. Meanwhile the beat driven commotion was at the hands of an eager teen, chattering incessantly about snares and breaks, with who I would later begin a project called Thieves Of Time and a friendship that would take in a couple of continents, Hank Shocklee, vegan cuisine, homesprung squat parties, some dangerous driving and envariably, an extremely large amount of records. Probably should have told him to shove it and taken the first tram to the lake and fed a few swans. But now is not the time for anecdotes. Suffice to say my young compadre has benefitted greatly from his Jedi training - many years of healthy eating, no internet nor mywasteoftimespace until recently, and no televisual distractions to speak of. Music is his sanctuary, the kick is in sync with his heart. The only person you'd ever accept a phonecall from at 2 o'clock in the morning, because you know this is the 489th time you're about to hear a drum break he's just found on some horrible czech prog rock sampler, and a week later you're going to hear the resultant composition. The zen master of the "three ways to flip a drum break" chamber, dishing out his own brand of snare science to the likes of Black Spade and Moxo Tengu. The ultimate studio plug-in "Breakplus, can you fix this?" Hear now, exclusively to shhhhh, a selection of his finest wax, all original pressings found in the field, full of mood, spirit and soul. Ride the time machine through the valleys of the past and the undiscovered planets of the future... Take a take deep breath and inhale the soft sweet perfume of the saturnian air.. Down by the river... Massive respect to Mr Benson for the artwork too, inspired by World Galaxy, a fitting expression of the holistic approach of the music.. one Mr Beatnick, March 2007 |
